Head Coach Craig Newell summed it up well after the game: "That's one we have to put away."
Power City erased a one-goal deficit with three goals in 2:27 to start the third period. Goals by Joey Kinder, Carter Winiarski, and AJ McCune seemed to put the Bruins up for good. However the Rochester Jr. Americans stormed back late with three of their own in 4:15, two on the power play and the final at even strength with 11.4 to go to take the victory away from the Bruins, 4-3.
Winiarski added an assist for a multi-point night. Aiden Loncar, Dario Savard, and Hayden Hockaday also had helpers for the Bruins. Cody Schoen started his second game of the season for Power City and was strong in goal, stopping 29 of 33 attempts. Winiarski now has points in four consecutive games (4-4-8), and Savard has helpers in back to back contests.
The Bruins played an overall strong defensive contest until late in the third when the Amerks scored back to back with the man advantage - the second turned into a 6-on-4 with the goaltender called to the bench. The shot total was 20-6 in favor of the visitors, however many of those shots were kept to the outside until late.
Where the Bruins may have most of their regret isn't the third period: Power City has 4 odd-man rushes in the opening 10 minutes and failed to record a shot on goal.
The Bruins were happy to get all of their skaters back for this contest, welcoming Derrek Wolski back after an extended absence. However that enjoyment was short-lived as forward Benny Lazzaro left the game after five seconds and did not return. The ailment does appear short-lived as Lazzaro was in good spirits post game and appeared to have shaken off the hard contact at center ice.
The Bruins also flashed an improved power play that deserved better than their 1-for-4 showing. Multiple lines of forwards did a nice job cycling and getting the puck to their defensemen, who made good decisions getting puck either to the net or deep in the zone. Wolski was strong in his return to the line-up, Vance Graham and Jake Nobel had several head-up plays near the blue line, Kamden Proper made his presence felt with a strong open ice hit and good decision making, and Jack Boddecker flashed his poise and speed maintaining control and starting several breakouts from the defensive zone.
Nicholas Sobczyk and Nobel led the way with a pair of blocks each, which Brody Hockaday and Savard led the physicality with four hits a piece. The Bruins need a short memory as they travel to Amherst to take on the Knights at the Northtowns Center on Saturday at 1:20pm.
